The Ultimate Guide to Los Sueños, Costa Rica

Los Sueños is one of Costa Rica’s premier resort communities, set along the Central Pacific coast in Herradura Bay. With a world-class marina, an 18-hole golf course, a private beach club, and some of the best sportfishing in the world, it’s no wonder travelers keep coming back. This ultimate guide covers everything you need to plan your perfect getaway.

Where Is Los Sueños?

Los Sueños Marriott Ocean & Golf Resort sits about 90 minutes from San José’s international airport (SJO), making it one of the most accessible luxury destinations in Costa Rica. The resort community encompasses private villas, condominiums, and the Marriott hotel: all surrounded by tropical rainforest and the Pacific Ocean.

The drive from the airport follows Route 27 (the Costanera), a modern highway that winds through the foothills before arriving at the Herradura exit. The scenery transitions from the Central Valley’s cloud forests to the sun-drenched Pacific coast, giving you a taste of Costa Rica’s diversity before you even unpack.

Getting to Los Sueños

From San José Airport (SJO)

The most common route is via Route 27 (the Costanera Highway), covering approximately 95 kilometers (about 60 miles) in roughly 90 minutes, depending on traffic. The road is well-maintained and clearly marked, making self-driving straightforward for those comfortable with international travel.

Private Transfers: If you prefer not to drive, pre-arranged private transfers cost around $136 per group (available through GetYourGuide or local operators like SJO Shuttle). These include bilingual drivers who can offer local insights along the way. Round-trip transfers run approximately $250–$300.

Rental Cars: Major agencies operate at SJO airport. A 4WD vehicle is recommended, though the main highway is paved and the resort roads are well-maintained. Daily rental rates start around $40–$60 for a compact car, higher for SUVs.

Rideshare: Uber and local taxi services operate in the San José area, though availability becomes more limited once you leave the city. Taxis from the airport to Los Sueños are metered but can run $120–$150.

Driving Tips

  • Route 27 has tolls (approximately $2–$4 each); have small bills or a reusable toll transponder
  • Drive defensively—rain can make roads slick, and local drivers may pass aggressively
  • Stop at the fruit stands along the highway for fresh mango, papaya, or coconut water
  • Allow extra time during rainy season (September–November) for potential delays

The Neighborhoods and Areas

Los Sueños is more than just a resort—it’s a collection of distinct neighborhoods, each with its own character.

Marina Village

The heart of the community centers around the world-class marina, which accommodates vessels up to 200 feet. Marina Village is home to charter offices, restaurants, and boutique shops. The boardwalk offers stunning sunset views over Herradura Bay, and it’s the departure point for sportfishing charters and sunset cruises.

The Marriott Resort

The Los Sueños Marriott Ocean & Golf Resort anchors the community with its grand lobby, multiple restaurants, spa, and beachfront location. Even if you’re staying in a private condo or villa, Marriott amenities remain accessible through the resort’s guest services.

Condominium Communities

Several condo complexes populate the hillsides above the marina, offering ocean views, shared pools, and direct beach club access. Properties range from comfortable 2-bedroom units to expansive penthouses with wraparound balconies. These are popular with families and groups seeking more space than a hotel room without sacrificing amenities.

Villa Neighborhoods

Private villas cluster in the gated communities along the golf course and hillside roads. These luxury homes feature private pools, gourmet kitchens, and expansive outdoor living spaces. Many come with dedicated property management, making them ideal for extended stays or special occasions.

La Iguana Golf Course

The 18-hole championship course weaves through the resort, with holes that challenge players of all skill levels. The course is renowned for its wildlife—monkeys, toucans, and coatis regularly appear on the fairways, and the views of the ocean from several elevated tees are spectacular.

Beach Club

The private Beach Club offers residents and guests exclusive access to a sandy stretch of Herradura Bay. Multiple pools (including a children’s pool), a restaurant and bar, and non-motorized water sports make this a hub of activity. The beach is generally calm and safe for swimming, though conditions can change during rough season (October–December).

What to Do

Sportfishing

The marina at Los Sueños is the epicenter of big-game fishing in Costa Rica. Sailfish, marlin, tuna, and mahi-mahi run year-round, making this a bucket-list destination for anglers.

Popular operators include CR Fishing Charters, Maverick Sportfish, and the fleet based directly at the Marina. We can arrange private charters for half-day or full-day trips. Read our complete Los Sueños fishing guide for seasons, tips, and what to expect.

Golf

La Iguana Golf Course winds through the rainforest with views of the ocean and mountains. The 6,700-yard, par-72 course was designed to blend with its natural surroundings, and indigenous flora and fauna are protected throughout.

  • Twilight rate: approximately $100
  • Club rental: $75

When to Visit: Seasonal Breakdown

Los Sueños is a year-round destination with two distinct seasons that each offer unique advantages.

Dry Season (December–April)

Daytime highs typically reach 85–90°F (29–32°C) with abundant sunshine and minimal rainfall. This is peak tourist season with calm seas, perfect for beach days and fishing trips. The landscape remains green from the previous rainy season, and wildlife is easier to spot near water sources.

Peak periods: Christmas (December 20–January 5), New Year’s, and Easter week see the highest rates and occupancy. Book 3–6 months in advance for these dates.

What to expect: Sunny days with occasional clouds, light breezes, and warm evenings. Perfect conditions for outdoor activities, sunset cruises, and golf.

Green Season (May–November)

Daytime temperatures average 80–85°F (27–29°C). Afternoon rain showers are common, usually lasting an hour or two before clearing. The landscape transforms into vibrant greens, and the beaches are noticeably less crowded.

Shoulder seasons: May–June and September–October offer a balance of good weather and smaller crowds. September and October see the most rainfall, but many guests enjoy the quieter atmosphere and lower rates.

What to expect: Mornings are typically sunny, with rain arriving in the afternoon or evening. The greens are lush, waterfalls are at their fullest, and fishing remains excellent.

Fishing Calendar

The fishing calendar runs year-round, with sailfish present throughout the year and peak marlin season from May to November. Water temperatures remain warm year-round, around 80–82°F (27–28°C), making swimming pleasant in any season.

Los Sueños offers two main accommodation types, each with distinct pricing.

Condominiums in the resort community typically range from $350 to $600 per night, depending on size, view, and season. These range from spacious 2-bedroom units to large penthouses with wraparound balconies.

Private villas with multiple bedrooms, private pools, and premium amenities range from $500 to $1,000+ per night during peak season, depending on size, location, and inclusions.

Day Trips

Los Sueños serves as an excellent base for exploring the Central Pacific region.

Manuel Antonio National Park (about an hour south): Costa Rica’s most popular national park combines pristine beaches with rainforest trails where you might spot monkeys, sloths, and toucans. Allow a full day to explore the trails and beaches. Admission is approximately $15 per person, and we recommend arriving early to beat the crowds.

Arenal Volcano (3 hours north): A full-day trip to one of Costa Rica’s most iconic destinations. Hot springs, waterfall hikes, and the volcano itself make this worth the drive. Consider overnight stays for a more relaxed experience.

Monteverde Cloud Forest (4 hours north): Famous for its zip lines, hanging bridges, and unique cloud forest ecosystem. The scenic drive crosses the continental divide with spectacular views. This works best as a two-day trip.

Getting Around

A golf cart is the best way to navigate the resort community. We arrange rentals for all our guests: included with many of our properties. The cart lets you access the Beach Club, Marina Village, and golf course without worrying about parking.

For trips beyond the resort, a rental car provides the most flexibility. Rideshares and taxis are available but may require advance booking for pickup.
