CENTRAL PACIFIC COSTA RICA

Golf in Costa Rica: Courses, Tips & Planning Guide

Championship fairways inside tropical rainforest, scarlet macaws flying overhead, and monkeys crossing between holes. Year-round golf season, no wetsuit required.

Golf in Costa Rica's Central Pacific

Golf in Costa Rica isn't just a round — it's a wildlife encounter with 18 holes attached. The Central Pacific's signature course, La Iguana at Los Sueños Resort, runs through primary and secondary rainforest with ocean views, elevation changes, and resident wildlife that occasionally steals golf balls. This is the kind of place where you pause mid-backswing because a scarlet macaw just landed in the tree next to the green.

Designed by Ted Robinson Jr., La Iguana plays 6,900 yards from the tips with water hazards on 12 holes and narrow fairways framed by jungle. It rewards accuracy over distance and punishes wayward shots with ball-eating rainforest. The greens are fast and undulating; caddies earn their tip on the putting surfaces alone. Beyond La Iguana, Costa Rica has additional courses scattered along the Pacific corridor — from scenic 9-hole layouts to the exclusive Four Seasons.

The golf season runs year-round. December through April (dry season) brings the most consistent conditions — cooler mornings, less humidity, and the best tee time availability for visitors staying in the area. Rainy season rounds (May–November) are entirely playable; afternoon showers rarely last more than an hour, and the course is dramatically green.

La Iguana plays 6,900 yards from the championship tees with a slope rating in the mid-130s. Water hazards threaten on 12 of 18 holes. Narrow fairways cut through primary and secondary rainforest demand control off the tee — this is not a course where grip-and-rip works. Signature holes include the par-3 17th with its island green and the oceanfront 18th finishing back at the clubhouse. The practice facility has a driving range, putting greens, and a short game area. Expect scarlet macaws at the tree line, sloths hanging near the 7th, and monkeys crossing the cart path on the back nine.

What to Know Before You Play

Practical details that will save you strokes, money, and frustration on your Costa Rica golf trip.

What to Bring

  • Extra golf balls (6–8 minimum). The jungle is unforgiving and iguanas have been known to carry off Pro V1s. Budget for lost balls.
  • Breathable performance clothing. Collared shirts and golf shorts or pants required. No denim, no athletic shorts. Tropical heat calls for moisture-wicking fabrics.
  • Soft-spike golf shoes. Metal spikes are not permitted. Soft spikes protect the greens and give adequate traction on cart paths.
  • High-SPF sunscreen and a hat. You're at 10° north latitude in the tropics; the UV index is intense even on overcast mornings. Apply before you tee off, not at the turn.
  • A camera or phone in a dry bag. The wildlife encounters alone are worth documenting. Monkeys crossing your line, macaws at the tree line — it happens every round.

Best Time to Play

December – April (Dry Season)

The classic golf season: cooler mornings (mid-70s°F), low humidity, and consistent day-to-day conditions. Fairways and greens are at their best. This is peak demand — book tee times 3–5 days out and expect a full course. Early morning rounds (before 8am) offer cooler temperatures and peak wildlife activity.

May – November (Green Season)

Mornings are often clear and beautiful. Afternoon showers are common but typically short; many rounds finish before rain arrives. Green fees may be lower, the course is more available, and the rainforest backdrop is at its most lush. Twilight rates (after 2pm) are the best value but come with a risk of afternoon showers on the back nine.

Best tip: Book morning tee times (6:30–8am) year-round. You get cooler temperatures, drier conditions, better wildlife viewing, and the course to yourselves before afternoon groups arrive.

Insider Tips

Hire a caddie even if you normally don't. La Iguana caddies are exceptional: they read the greens expertly, know exactly where errant shots land in the jungle (saving you strokes and frustration), and offer course knowledge that elevates the whole experience. Caddie fee is $30–40 plus tip — they'll save you at least 3–5 strokes.

Book afternoon tee times (after 2pm) for discounted twilight rates and better wildlife viewing. The heat is more intense, but monkeys and macaws are more active as the day cools. Twilight rates drop to $135–150 for 18 holes.

Guests staying at Nest Stays properties in Los Sueños and Herradura get preferred access to La Iguana tee times. Our concierge handles booking, so you don't have to call the pro shop from home. Just let us know when you arrive.

The par-3 17th has an island green. It's beautiful, memorable, and requires a full carry over water. Don't try to cut the corner — respect the shot, club up for the wind, and enjoy the moment. This is why you came.

Golf in Costa Rica: Common Questions

Everything golfers ask before booking a trip to play La Iguana and the Central Pacific.

Is Costa Rica good for golf? +
Yes. Costa Rica offers championship-level courses set inside tropical rainforest, with ocean views, resident wildlife, and year-round playable weather. La Iguana Golf Course at Los Sueños Resort — an 18-hole Ted Robinson Jr. design — is the standout on the Central Pacific and one of the most memorable golf experiences in Central America. The combination of a challenging layout, impeccable conditioning, and guaranteed wildlife encounters (scarlet macaws, monkeys, sloths on the course) makes it genuinely unique.
How much does a round of golf cost in Costa Rica? +
Green fees at La Iguana Golf Course (Los Sueños) run $185–210 for 18 holes depending on season, with twilight rates after 2pm dropping to $135–150. Cart rental is included. Club rentals (Callaway full sets) cost $60. Caddie fees are $30–40 plus tip. More affordable 9-hole options around Costa Rica start at $35–65 per round.
Is golf in Jacó worth it? +
Absolutely, especially La Iguana Golf Course at Los Sueños Resort, about 10 minutes from Jacó. It's a legitimate championship layout — 6,900 yards from the tips, water hazards on 12 holes, and rainforest bordering every fairway. The wildlife alone (scarlet macaws, monkeys, iguanas on cart paths) makes it unlike any course back home. Guests staying at Nest Stays properties in Los Sueños and Herradura get preferred tee time access through our concierge.
Can beginners play golf in Costa Rica? +
Yes. La Iguana at Los Sueños has multiple tee options that make the course manageable for mid-to-high handicappers. The pro shop rents full Callaway club sets for $60, and caddies are available to help with course navigation and green reads. A round will challenge you, but it won't punish beginners who play from the appropriate tees and hire a caddie. Twilight rates (after 2pm, $135–150) are a good option for first-timers who want to try the course without the full peak-rate commitment.
Do I need to book a tee time in advance at La Iguana? +
Yes — especially December through April (peak season), when tee times book 3–5 days out. Resort guests and Los Sueños property owners get priority access and can reserve further in advance. Public tee times are available but limited. Book through the pro shop or ask your Nest Stays concierge to handle it before you arrive.
Can I rent golf clubs at Los Sueños? +
Yes. The pro shop rents full Callaway sets for $60 per round, in both men's and women's configurations. Quality is solid — fine for most golfers. If you're a low handicapper who's particular about equipment, bring your own clubs. The practice range and putting greens let you test rental clubs before your round.
What wildlife will I see playing golf in Costa Rica? +
At La Iguana: scarlet macaws fly over in pairs during morning and late afternoon, three-toed sloths hang in trees near several fairways, howler and white-faced capuchin monkeys cross between holes, and iguanas sun themselves on cart paths. Sightings are guaranteed — budget a few minutes for the monkeys to cross your fairway. Bring a camera; the encounters alone are worth documenting.
What is the dress code at La Iguana Golf Course? +
Standard golf attire: collared shirts, golf shorts or pants, soft-spiked golf shoes. No denim, no athletic shorts, no tank tops. The club enforces the dress code but isn't overly formal — this is tropical golf, not Augusta. Most players wear lightweight performance fabrics. Breathability matters more than brand here.
